History of the Instrument
Born in West London in 1949, Brian Alvey joined the Hills in September 1966 after considering a career as a compositor in the print industry. However, after being informed that there were no job vacancies, he decided to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both carpenters, and pursue a career as a woodworker. At just 17 years old, he signed his apprenticeship papers within six months.
Alvey was trained by Malcolm Taylor and John Clutterbuck. Upon Taylor's departure in 1972, he ascended to the role of senior bowmaker and went on to train John Stagg, Matthew Coltman, David Earl, and Ian Shepherd. When the Hill firm moved to Buckinghamshire in 1978, Alvey chose to remain in London, setting up his own business in Sunbury, Middlesex, where he continues to make bows to this day.
